American Red Cross Training Classes

Lifeguard Training


Whispering Pines City Park Aquatic Complex will be offering the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification Class beginning with the Prerequisite Skills Test on Friday, May 19, 2017 from 3:30 - 4:00 pm at the pool. The Red Cross class is designed to give those that successfully complete the course the ability to recognize and respond to emergencies in and around pool environments. Student will have an understanding of patron surveillance, accident/injury prevention, CPR and first aid as well as many other professional skills.

The cost for the Lifeguard Certification class is $145 and will include seven (7) hours of on-line course and twenty one (21) hours of class/pool skill learning. The fee does not include the manual which can be downloaded or ordered as a hard copy from www.redcross.org at $35 per copy. The fee does not include the Red Cross online registration fee of $35 which is paid by the participant to access the online portion of the class. The online registration is completed once the participant successfully completes the prerequisite portion of the course.



Prerequisite course will include:

  • Student must be 15 years of age on or before the final scheduled lesson which is to be announced.
  • Student must demonstrate the ability to swim 300 yards, front crawl or breast stroke with rhythmic breathing, proper stroke, kick and glides.
  • Student must be able to tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs and student must be able to complete a timed swim (no more than 1 minute, 40 seconds) recovering a 10 pound brick from 10 feet of water and return to the starting point 20 yards away.
Prerequisite Testing: Friday, May 19, 2017 from  3:30 - 4:00 pm
Class Dates: June 2 - 4, 2017 (Friday - Sunday)  8 am - 3:30 pm

Participant must register and payment made by May 19, 2017. There will be a $35 non-refundable fee for processing if unable to pass the skill check.

Training

Water Safety/Swim Lesson Instructor


Water Safety Instructor (WSI) courses are also held at the Whispering Pines City Park Pool facility on an annual basis when demand for the course is met. The WSI course certifies the successful candidate with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to become a swim lesson instructor at most swimming pool facilities in the country.

The Water Safety Instructor (WSI) course will be held with the prerequisite on March 4, 2017 from 9 - 10 am.  Upon successful completion of the prerequisite, classes will be held from 9 am - 1 pm on Saturdays, March 11, March 18, March 25, April 1 and April 8th. the course is approximately 30 hours in length.

The prerequisite swim test consists of a demonstration of each stroke: Front, crawl, back crawl, breast stroke, elementary, backstroke and sidestroke for a distance of 25 yards and the butterfly stroke for 15 yards, all at a level 4 competency.  In addition, the potential candidate needs to be able to maintain a back float for 1 minute and to tread water for 1 minute.
