Updated City of Inverness Huricane Irma Vegatative Debris Clean-Up

FEMA Debris Removal Guidlines small

A preliminary assessment by City Staff finds a large amount of vegetative debris has been generated from Hurricane Irma.

FOR RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY

The amount of material will not be collected normally as it is possible that the amount of vegetative debris will increase as homeowners continue to clean yards and place debris for collection at the curb. The City has contracted with two firms that are compliant with the FEMA process. The collection of storm related debris will commence October 2nd, 2017.  One pass will be made in the City and work will continue daily until complete. We expect it will take one-month to complete the “pass” and collect what is placed curbside by residents.

If you miss the storm related collection of debris, the normal residential City Vegetative Weekly Collection program will apply.  2-cubic yards of material may be placed curbside for collection per week. A fee program is available to remove larger amounts.   

FOR PRIVATE ROADS AND PLANNED DEVELOPMENTS

It is the responsibility of the property owner/site manager (HOA) to dispose of its debris. FEMA will not reimburse the City for this removal.  We will meet with Homeowner Association Management to help you contact FEMA to determine if funding will be available to you for collection of storm related vegetative debris on Private Roads and in your location. Information will be updated as it becomes available.

FOR COMMERCIAL PROPERTY AND BUSINESSES

It is the responsibility of the property owner/site manager to dispose of its debris. FEMA will not reimburse the City for this removal and the City does not provide this service.

GUIDELINES TO PROPERLY PLACE VEGETATIVE DEBRIS FOR COLLECTION

  • Vegetative debris should be placed curbside, not in the roadway or sidewalk.
  • Do not place debris under trees that may impede equipment to remove vegetation.
  • Do not place debris on storm drains, next to fire hydrants, mail boxes, or on top of water meters or any utility feature that may be in the right of way.
  • Vegetative debris should be placed in separate piles, in containers, or bagged. Vegetative debris will not be picked up if it is commingled with other garbage, wood/construction debris, metals, white goods such as refrigerators/hot water heaters/ dishwasher.
  • Do not use plastic bags for vegetative debris as it makes it impossible to recycle or mulch. Do not put garbage in the vegetative debris piles.

Please be aware that dumping any type of debris from private subdivisions and/or commercial operations onto public roadways, in private dumpsters, or not disposing of debris in a legal manner is subject to code enforcement action, and all actions available by law.
